Promotionsvorhaben: Interstate Treaties and Foreign Policy in Athens and Sparta, ca. 465-386 BCE

Abstract: I look at a collection of interstate treaties from the 5th and early 4th centuries BCE involving Athens and/or Sparta and explore their potential as evidence for shifting foreign policies in both cities with an emphasis on how powerful individuals or small groups could use treaties as a tool to upset the existing policy consensus. As well as examining these treaties individually, I also analyze thematic commonalities between them.
