Aims of the Program
The two-year degree MA in Ancient History offers students a more profound exploration of Greek and Roman History and expands the skills and knowledge acquired in a Bachelor’s degree in a classics-related academic field. Almost uniquely in Germany, the MA Ancient History is offered as a 100% degree in one of Germany’s most renowned institutes of Ancient History. The program aims to deepen and expand the skills acquired during the Bachelor's degree in the field of Roman and Greek antiquity. In order to intensify interdisciplinary knowledge in the subject of Ancient History, the Masters program in Ancient History includes courses from the Departments of Papyrology, Prehistory and Early History, Classical Archaeology, Byzantine Archaeology and Art History as well as Classical Philology. In addition to this interdisciplinary emphasis, the Master's degree course in Ancient History focuses more strongly on the auxiliary sciences of ancient studies in the fields of Greek and Roman antiquity.
Requirements
Admission requirement is an above-average degree in a B.A. program in History (with a focus on Ancient History) or Classical Studies. In all other cases, a case-by-case assessment applies.

The Language Requirements include Latin, Ancient Greek, German, as well as English and another modern language. Please contact the Academic Advisor, Dr. Wolfgang Havener, for further information.
Application
As an international student, you need to apply for the MA Ancient History. You may start your degree either in the summer or the winter semester. The application period lasts from April 1st to September 30th for the winter semester and from October 1st to March 31st for the summer semester. Please note that the MA Ancient History is a consecutive Master’s degree. Therefore, an undergraduate degree in a classics-related field is a necessary requirement for a successful application.

Application Deadlines
The application period for all consecutive Master's degree programs with restricted admission is from 01.04. to 30.09. (for the winter semester) or 01.10.-31.03. (for the summer semester) of a year. The deadlines apply equally to German and international applicants.
